Performance of Structural Glued Laminated Members
Structural glued laminated structural members (glu-lams or glulams) are one of the most versatile engineered wood products available to the designer. Beams and columns can be built to almost any depth and size, can be arched and cambered, can be specified with a high quality architectural finish that can add to the aesthetic appearance of the structure if left exposed, and have an inherent fire-resistance. However, like all engineering materials, glu-lams have some limitations, and when those limitations are exceeded, glu-lams can become distressed in a number of unique ways. Through a series of case studies, this paper presents a number of distress and failure mechanisms in glu-lams that have been observed by the authors, based on many years of evaluating existing glu-lam members.
