Comparative Tests of an Electric Motor and a Stream Locomotive on the Manhattan (Elevated) Railway, New York
In February, 1889, the writer was detailed from the Chief Engineer's Department by the General Manager, Colonel F. K. Hain, M. Am. Soc. C. E., to conduct tests to determine the efficiency of an experimental “direct” electric system of motive power, as compared with the present steam locomotive performance. The system was one of three which bad been tried at various times on the elevated roads, and the only one which had been pushed far enough to be recognized as a possible competitor of the steam locomotive, and much credit is due to the inventor's skill and persistence.
