Optimum Length of a Heavy Cable with a Concentrated Load
A cable with nonnegligible self-weight carries a point load on its span. The objective is to determine the optimum cable length such that the maximum tension of the cable is minimal. This important design problem is solved analytically using an efficient cable formulation. The first kind of optimization considers a given load at a specific location on the cable. The second kind of optimization considers a given load moving across the span. Optimum cable lengths are tabulated for different nondimensional loads.
