Additive Manufacturing: A Revolutionized Power for Construction Industrialization
Additive manufacturing (AM) technology (also known as 3D-printing) is a potentially revolutionizing power for construction industrialization compared with prefabrication. This study investigates the positive role of AM technology in the construction industrialization process through a systematic literature review. The paper first redefines the construction industrialization process in the Industry 4.0 age with reference to the industrialization process in the manufacturing industry. Next, barriers like high transportation cost encountered in the prefabrication process are pointed out by comparing with state-of-the-art AM construction technologies. Finally, the possible combination of advanced technologies including cyber-physical system (CPS) in the future development future of AM in the construction industry is reviewed. This paper is expected to facilitate further research and application of this technology.
