Characterization of the Moisture Susceptibility of Cement-Stabilized Base Materials Using the Tube Suction Test
Traditionally, the tube suction test (TST) has been used to characterize the affinity of the unbound and stabilized aggregate systems to hold and transport moisture. The variation of the dielectric values measured at the top of the specimen is correlated with the change in the moisture state of the stabilized systems. The motivation for this study was to evaluate the applicability of the TST procedure to characterize the durability issues associated with the use of reclaimed materials in cement treated layers. To achieve this objective, several virgin and reclaimed aggregate systems were subjected to multiple curing/conditioning procedures in the laboratory. Based on the laboratory observations, reclaimed concrete aggregates (RCA) significantly underperformed other permutations of the experiment design in terms of higher moisture susceptibility potential manifested by high dielectric values. This information can be beneficial for practitioners and the pavement design engineers considering reclaimed materials as an alternative source for aggregates in base layers.
