Lessons Learned: Oklahoma State Highway 99 over the Washita River
This paper examines a significant bridge project and four factors that contributed to the design, construction, and sustainability of the project. The four factors include the environment, society, site conditions, and economics. Engineers and contractors are well-versed in designing and building transportation projects within the constraints of federal environmental guidelines and strict budgets while keeping the needs of the local community and environment in mind. This is especially true for projects with locally “normal” site conditions. A project overview of Oklahoma State Highway 99 over the Washita River looks at what happened when all four factors were extreme. The project endured many delays, alternative design studies, public opposition, and difficulties during construction. The project was eventually completed, but not before Mother Nature contributed her input.
