Aimed to develop an understanding of fundamental mechanisms of shaft resistances (shear behaviour) between a pile (concrete) and the surrounding rock (sandstone), recent research into pile shafts for socketed in sandstone has been carried out. On the basis of observation and analysis of test results, a fundamental understanding of shear behaviour between sandstone and concrete has being achieved and a significant fact that affects the shear behaviour of sandstone/concrete joint has been identified. This paper will present the detailed experimental investigation of pile shafts socketed in sandstone. An analytical model has been developed for estimating pile shafts on the basis of observations from experimental program. The prediction of the model has been compared with the experimental results and shows good agreement.
