Interaction of Rigid Pile-Supported Embankment on Soft Soil
Rigid pile-supported embankments are widely used to construct highways, dams, storage tanks, and so forth, on soft soils. The interaction between the components of a piled embankment including the embankment fill, the pile, and the foundation soil is complicated. The pile, the embankment fill, and the soil are assumed to deform one-dimensionally. An approximate closed-form solution is obtained, which considers soil arching in the embankment fill, the negative skin friction along pile, and the settlement of the substratum. Studies on examples with different soil profiles and pile lengths indicate that the solution is consistent with those obtained from a rigorous finite element method (Plaxis). The stress concentration on the pile top, load distribution along pile, the settlement of the embankment, and the soil are investigated.
