Analysis of Differential Settlement of Circular Tank Foundations on Multilayered Soil
Circular plates have been widely used as foundations of large-diameter storage tanks. Investigation of the flexural behavior of a uniformly-loaded circular plate on elastic soil is of significant interest in the tank design process. This paper presents a continuum-based, semi-analytical, elastic analysis model for a uniformly-loaded circular plate resting on a multilayered soil deposit. The governing differential equations are derived based on variational principles and solved semi-analytically. Results from the proposed analysis model are compared with those from PLAXIS and show reasonable accuracy. Parametric studies for a circular plate resting on two- and three-layered soil deposits using the semi-analytical model provide important insights about the effects of soil layering on the differential settlement of circular tank foundation.
