Erosion by Circular Wall Jets in Cross Flow
This paper presents the results of an exploratory study which was conducted to understand the erosion process caused by circular wall jets of air and water issuing normally to a free-stream on a loose bed of sand or polystyrene, and also to develop some useful relations for use in the design of the pier-type diffusers in rivers. If ϵ* is the ratio of the maximum depth of erosion in the asymptotic state caused by the circular wall jet in cross flow to that by the same jet without any cross flow, it has been found that ϵ* is mainly a function of the densimetric Froude number F1 based on the velocity of the cross flow. The profile of the scour hole along its axis as well as its cross-sectional shape were found to be similar.
