By analyzing the work input in unsaturated granular materials, Houlsby (1997) obtained the simplified version of Bishop's equation as the effective stress equation for unsaturated soils. In his paper, Houlsby idealized the structure of unsaturated soils as a set of particles linked together by water meniscus. However, a real soil generally exhibits a bimodal structure where unsaturated as well as saturated packets of particles can be found. Based on the analysis made by Houlsby (1997), but now considering a bimodal structure of the soil, it is possible to establish an equivalent stress that accounts for the influence of suction on the strength of unsaturated soils. This equivalent stress has the same structure as Bishop's equation. However, this analysis shows that Bishop's parameter χ depends not only on the degree of saturation of the unsaturated fraction of the soil but also on the volumes of the saturated and unsaturated fractions.
