The Hudson River Tunnel
The Hudson River tunnel is being constructed by direct application of compressed air in accordance with the “Haskin” system of tunnelling in soft material. Soundings were first carefully taken and the best location agreed upon. A shaft was sunk on the New Jersey shore near the river line, and from the side of the shaft the tunnel was started under the river on such a grade as never to leave less than twenty feet between the bottom of the river and the top of the tunnel. In some respects this work resembles that of Mr. Chesbrough at Chicago and Detroit.
