The Brazos River Harbor Improvement
The Brazos River and the harbor at its mouth have played a very important part in the development of the State of Texas, since the earliest settlements on the coast by American colonies; and the success which has recently been attained there in making it the deepest harbor on the coast, is likely to give it much greater prominence in the future. In 1824 General Austin made the harbor a port of entry for the colony. The commerce soon became of considerable importance and continued to increase until 1858, at which time a large amount of the river traffic was diverted to Houston over the raillroad built west from that city.
