Stability Analysis of Embankments Supported by Geosynthetic Encased Stone Columns
Geosynthetic encased stone columns have the potential to contribute to the stability of soft clay deposits under embankments; however, there is a need to quantify the degree of this contribution. To evaluate this contribution, a two-dimensional finite difference method was used to investigate the effect of geosynthetic encased stone columns on the factor of safety of deep-seated slope failure of an embankment constructed over a soil deposit under the short-term condition. In this study, the effect of columns was evaluated using two different models with column walls and an equivalent improved area. A parametric study was conducted using these models to investigate the influence factors that may have a direct impact on the factor of safety, including the spacing and size of stone columns, cohesion of the soil deposit, and stiffness of geosynthetic. The results of this analysis are presented in several charts.
