Study on the Performance of the Reinforced Piled Embankment
The reinforced piled embankment (RPE) is a geotechnial composite system, consisting of five elements: piles, caps, mat with geo-grids and gravels, embankment fill and ground. This embankment system is applied for reducing lateral and vertical deformations of embankments constructed on weak foundation soils. The behavior of RPE is different from that of pile foundation or composite foundation, which has not been fully understood yet. Base on the principle of the plane of equal settlement, load transfer mechanisms between soils and piles through pile caps are investigated. This method can consider the size of caps, pile spacing, the performance of embankment fill and geogrids. The parameters, affecting the performance of embankments, such as differential settlements, cap size, and geo-grids are discussed respectively. The proposed method can conveniently obtain the ratio of loads carried by caps (piles) and the settlement of RPE.
