Application of SCPTU for Assessing Liquefaction Potential of the 1976 Tangshan Earthquake, China
Recent findings related to the application of the shear wave velocity for the evaluation of liquefaction potential are first reviewed. Some sites were characterized using this in situ device and the results of these investigations are presented in this paper. Seismic piezocone penetration tests provided the in situ shear wave velocities of the subsurface sediments in Tangshan region, China, which were used to evaluate the liquefaction potentials of these soils. Two empirical methods based on normalized shear wave velocity are studied, which showed that the correlation between shear wave velocity data and liquefaction resistance was in better agreement with the boundary curve approach developed by the earlier studies. The correlation of qc/G0-CRR7.5 can assess correctly liquefaction potential of Tangshan sites.
