Three-Dimensional Modeling of Excavation Sequences
Finite element analyses of the construction of supported excavations are simplifications of the actual process. Issues related to geometry, the support system details, constitutive representation of the soil response and the construction process dictate the use of such simplifications. While many of these factors remain beyond current numerical capabilities, three-dimensional finite element analysis can be effectively used to simulate actual excavation sequences. This is illustrated by analysis of the excavation for the Ford Engineering Design Center in Evanston, IL. Observed lateral movements and strut loads at this site are compared with results of three-dimensional finite element simulations of the design and actual excavation procedures to illustrate the method's applicability.
