A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
History of the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences, University of Florida
This paper presents an overview of the 60 year history of the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences. The University of Florida, along with the University of California, Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Michigan State, and Rutgers were the original five graduate sanitary engineering programs in the United States. This history is divided into three periods: 1948–1966 when the program was housed in Civil Engineering; 1966–1972 when the new graduate Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences was formed; and 1972 to present with an undergraduate environmental engineering major added to the graduate program. The last part of the paper describes future goals for the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences.
