Non-Traditional Structural Applications of Steel Buckling-Restrained Braces
For nearly two decades buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) have been used in the United States as bracing elements in the main lateral force resisting system of braced frame buildings. However, only recently have BRBs been used in alternative structural applications, including in stiff spine frame systems and as fuses to limit the force imparted into other lateral force resisting elements. Given the versatility of BRBs, it is only a matter of time before the industry starts to use them in other structural systems. The creation of multiple BRB components by arranging BRBs in various configurations could replace the yielding regions of other lateral force resisting systems, providing more control over the post-yield behavior of a building and easier replacement of yielded regions after an earthquake. These components could be used in coupled shear walls, eccentrically braced frames, and moment frames.
