A Hundred Years of American Civil Engineering, 1852-1952
Commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), this paper is a record of the events that give the birthday its special significance. The writer divides his subject historically into two parts—the half preceding, and the half succeeding, the turn of the twentieth century. Each part traces the growth of specialties in civil engineering—railways, bridges, foundations, highways, water supply, sanitation, irrigation, power, public works, transportation, construction, tunnels, and dams. Throughout the narration are many fascinating and factual references to the personalities that have made the profession and the ASCE great.
