Ensuring Sustainability Through Mass Transit
hirty or forty years ago, the largest cities in the world included New York, London, and Tokyo. Today, those cities have been surpassed by Mumbai, Shanghai, Mexico City, and San Paulo, to name a few. This urbanization places enormous stress on these communities, and on their infrastructure.power, safe drinking water, housing, wastewater collection and treatment, industrial and office facilities, and, of course, transportation. The demand grows for transportation services and mobility induced by the population's needs of going to work, to school, to conduct business or leisure activities. This increasing demand poses a series of major challenges to transportation professionals around the world.
