Rebuilding of the Chicago Lakefront Lincoln Park, Reach 2-Diversey Avenue to Fullerton Avenue
The City of Chicago is undertaking a major rebuilding effort of their waterfront to reduce infrastructure damage from coastal flooding. It comprises of a series of projects to reconstruct public waterfront access and upgrade coastal flood protection to modern standards. One of the projects involved 1,800 ft of shoreline, extending from Diversey Avenue to just north of Fullerton Avenue, where shore protection is less than 150 ft from Lake Shore Drive, a vital transportation artery that has an average daily traffic volume of 150,000 vehicles. Previous shore protection for this reach comprised a paved beach, which has experienced several cycles of damage and repair during its lifetime of 70 years. The planning and design of the new structure had two main goals: 1) no flooding of Lake Shore Drive could occur from wave overtopping and 2) public access to the waterfront had to be upgraded and made safer. Baird & Associates was the engineer of record for this reach of shoreline, which was completed in 2005 at a cost of $15.5 million.
