The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently completed a $50-million program to rehabilitate the network of subsurface bridges in Philadelphia that support an at-grade road network around Amtrak’s 30th Street Station, the third-busiest rail hub in the nation. The project involved assessing and repairing steel members that had experienced section losses over the decades of as much as 100 percent in spots, ensuring that the structures will be able to support not only the roadways for another 20 to 30 years but also a new and inviting public space adjoining the station.
