Sustainable Asphalt Concrete for Major Resurfacing and Rehabilitation of Runways and Taxiways
Low maintenance yet durable and sustainable airfield infrastructure has become very important in the current economic climate. At the same time, however, airfield infrastructure must face the ever-increasing demand in aircraft utilization, climate change, new generation aircraft, and green credentials. To cope with these challenges a "new" family of ungrooved airfield asphalt concrete material has been designed based on performance encompassing workability, durability, and mechanical properties to meet the local environment and loading condition for use in runways and taxiways in the UK. The latest project at Manchester Airport's principal runway has been considered as a breakthrough, demonstrating many advantages of using ungrooved airfield asphalt concrete, and presented in detail in this paper.
