Small-Strain Stiffness of Frictional Soils via Thermo-Controlled Constant Water Content Resonant Column Testing
A series of Resonant Column (RC) tests in the low-shear-strain amplitude range were performed to investigate the behavior of frictional soils under thermally controlled cyclic torsional loading. An upgraded version of an existing RC apparatus was developed and calibrated to observe the variation of small-strain shear moduli (Gmax) and hence resonant frequencies of the test samples under a range of isotropic confinement pressures and various ambient temperatures. The tests were performed under undrained (constant-water content) conditions on statically compacted samples of silt (ML) and clayey sand (SC). Results show that while the silty samples did not experience a significant change in stiffness with increasing temperature, the dynamic behavior of clayey sand samples was largely affected by induced heat ranging between 20°C and 60°C (68°F and 140°F).
