Study on the Frost Resistance Test Method of Lime-Fly Ash Stabilized Material Base Course
Lime-fly ash stabilized material has been commonly used as base course in seasonal frozen region in China for its high strength and good water stability. But the frost damage happens both during the pavement construction and in service life. During the pavement construction, if the lime-fly ash base layer was exposed in winter, the surface of base course could be frozen resulting in severe deterioration. In this situation, it was not uncommon to remove the whole base course and repave it. However, it was not only a waste of money but also a waste of time. In service life, if the lime-fly ash base course was saturated, it could be severely damaged after several freeze-thaw cycles. Therefore, a study of the frost resistance ability of lime-fly ash material would have great significance. Based on the investigation of ten-year lowest temperature in seasonal frozen region in China and the actual in-service temperature of semi-rigid base, the frost resistance test method of lime-fly ash stabilized mixture was developed. The test was conducted on lime-fly ash mixtures with different mixing ratio. The frost resistance index was determined according to the retained strength ratio. The relationship between water absorption, density and frost resistance index was discussed as well.
