The American Railroad Viaduct.-Its Origin and Evolution
A new era in the design of a certain type of bridge began in 1868, with the construction of the Bullock Pen Viaduct on the Cincinnati and Louisville Short Line Railroad, “now L. and N.,” and the history of the American Railroad Viaduct is mainly a statement of its development since that time. From the beginning of railroads, engineers have been continually directing their efforts to produce structures which would not only fulfill all requirements, but which at the same time might be superior and bolder than any before; consequently each new form of truss, column or detail gave to the profession valuable suggestions of what could yet be done in so fertile a field for inventive ingenuity.
