Stability of Oscillations in Simple Surge Tank
Two different governing criteria, relevant in stability analyses of large oscillations in simple surge tanks, are considered. The constant turbine power output criterion is applicable as the basis of stability analyses for small oscillations. For large oscillations, this criterion is applicable only for that portion of the surge during which the net head remains greater than the rated head. For the portion of the surge during which the net head drops below the rated head, the constant gate area criterion is used. Computer studies indicate that the tank area which will give small oscillations of constant amplitude at rated head will result in damping of oscillations of large amplitude.
