Ultrasonic Measurements for Condition Assessment of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe
This paper presents 1) results of nondestructive evaluation, ultrasonic testing, performed on prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) components during a condition assessment and 2) validation of the nondestructive testing results in the laboratory on a sample with known defects. To manage the need for repairs, PCCP components are tested using a sonic/ultrasonic system that collects resonance frequency data and measures the propagation velocity of ultrasonic waves in concrete. For validation of the sonic/ultrasonic test results, a shear wave array system and was deployed pipes identified to have defects. The capability of the sonic/ultrasonic system was also validated in the laboratory on a reference concrete sample with known defects. Based on the results from this study, ultrasonic testing is capable to determine the location, approximate size of a delamination within the pipe core. The shear wave array also provides information related to depth of the delamination.
