Gradually Varying Two-Layer Stratified Flow
The basic equations of stratified flow in fiords are outlined. The mechanism of entrainment is physically explained, and the entrainment is then related to the shear stress at the interface and to the overall head loss of the flow. The general shape of the shear stress distribution is outlined. Assuming the width and the friction coefficient f stepwise constant, an analytical solution of the depth, density difference and densimetric Froude number variation can be found. In the case of a gradual variation of the width, the equations for numerical calculations are shown. Finally, the differential equations for stratified flow fiords are presented and solved.
