Grid-Like Elevation Patterns for Low-Rise Buildings in Hurricane-Prone Areas
For hurricane prone areas, this paper offers a conceptual model of grid-like floor and elevation pattern for the low-rise buildings that could aid in reducing the wind loads due to drag in a strong wind event. In the design, the first floor begins at a prescribed height from the ground to allow for the storm water surge. Every floor has an attic above its ceiling. The building has a provision that, in the event of being approached by hurricane strength storm, every main floor facade is covered by impact resistant shutters, while every attic space opens for a clear wind passage. Every main floor, excluding the attic, is designed as an enclosed space. Preliminary wind tunnel data on drag is presented. Provision of aerodynamically designed clear wind passages between different floors and different wings of the building, and mechanically or electrically controlled shutters for debris protection of cladding and glazed components are recommended in addition to the other structural and wind load design requirements.
