Creep Behavior of Recycled Asphalt Pavement Compacted at Elevated Temperatures
Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) can be beneficially reused as fill material in highway embankments or backfill behind retaining structures. In this study, deviator creep response of RAP compacted at different temperatures was investigated through a series of triaxial compression tests conducted at sustained deviatoric stresses. Test results showed that the compacted RAP represent classic creep response similar to soils. Creep rupture was observed at deviator stresses higher than 70% of the compressive strength. Compaction and compression at elevated temperatures increased the shear strength and reduced the creep strain of the RAP specimens. To minimize creep strain and potential for creep rupture, construction of structural fills containing RAP is recommended during warm months of the year.
