Peerless Pier Caps
The $102-million upgrade of the Trenton–Morrisville Toll Bridge, which spans the Delaware River to link Trenton, New Jersey, and Morrisville, Pennsylvania, featured the innovative use of cantilevered pier caps to facilitate the widening of the aging structure. Through this innovative design, the bridge was widened without having to carry out additional foundation work in the river. Replacing the deck and upgrading the approach structures helped to eliminate substandard conditions and improve traffic safety on a critical regional transportation link.
