Analysis of Seismic Settling Behavior of Coarse-Grained-Soil Subgrade
Seismic settlement is a major cause of seismically induced damage to highway and railway embankments. Site investigation was conducted which showed road embankment always settled by shaking in areas above intensity VIII during an earthquake, and embankment settlement increased exponentially with the rise of seismic intensity in the areas from seismic intensity VIII to X. According to the discrete element method calculation, seismic settlement caused by the relative movement of particles occurs only when the ground motion intensity reached a certain magnitude, and settlement value would increase with the rise of the ground motion intensity. Large-scale shaking table model tests were used to verify the results of numerical calculation, which found that the longer the duration and the wider the spectral range of seismic waves, the larger the seismic subsidence.
