One Rincon Hill: Raising the Bar
Atop one of San Francisco's famous seven hills, One Rincon Hill stands as a beacon for the emerging Rincon Hill neighborhood and as a sentry landmark for visitors entering the city by the Bay Bridge. The San Francisco skyline has forever changed. In addition to providing a significant visual impact, One Rincon Hill establishes a new benchmark for architectural and structural design of tall buildings in regions of high seismicity. Some of the most notable attributes of the building include the following: 1 Tallest residential structure on the west coast of the United States, 2 Tallest cast-in-place concrete building on the west coast of the United States, 3 Tallest performance-based design building in the United States, 4 First use of buckling restrained braces as outriggers in a high-rise building, 5 First use of a tuned liquid mass damper for occupant comfort in the United States. Developing and incorporating these new technologies into the design required close collaboration between the project's owner, architect, engineers, and contractor. The primary goal of the design team was to develop a safe, reliable, economical, and attractive building that would be well-received by the residential marketplace and the San Francisco community as a whole. The result of these efforts is a stunning building that has reshaped the San Francisco skyline with underlying design technology that is reshaping the way tall buildings are designed.
