Effect of Compaction Methods and Aggregate Gradations on Air Voids Distribution in Asphalt Mixtures
To analyze the effect of compaction methods and aggregate gradations on air voids distribution in asphalt mixtures, the air voids distribution of three aggregate gradations are characterized using x-ray computed technology and digital image processing technology based on the laboratory compaction methods of fabricated specimens in China. Furthermore, a mathematical model was made to describe the air void distribution within the internal structure of asphalt mixtures by means of statistical analysis. The results show that the aggregate gradations and compaction methods have considerable influence on air voids distribution within the specimens. The target volume of air voids and the internal volume air voids of Marshall specimens have little difference, while the internal volume of air voids is more than 1.4 times beyond the target volume of air voids of static compaction specimens. The statistical analysis performed validates the applicability of the two parameter mathematics model for quantifying the effect of compaction methods and aggregate gradations on air voids.
