Floating Bridge Construction Using Waterfront Methods
In early 2012, construction began on the world’s longest floating bridge in Seattle, Washington. The new SR 520 floating bridge spans 2,350 meters (7,710 feet) across the deep waters of Lake Washington and replaces the current, aging floating bridge for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The unique design-build project approach allowed the owner, engineers and contractors to work collaboratively to deliver the final project. Several project aspects combine waterfront design and construction methods with traditional bridge systems due to the substantial over water construction. In addition, the limited access, residential location, and site exposure led to a focus by the design-build team to maximize the use of precast materials that could be shipped to the bridge site for expedited overwater assembly. This paper will focus on the challenging aspects of the floating bridge construction, and the systems deployed to efficiently deliver material and personnel to the bridge site.
