Retrofit of Masonry Walls to Enhance Their Blast Resistance
Retrofitting masonry walls to enhance their blast resistance may be accomplished in a variety of ways, including the use of FRP, reinforced and unreinforced polymer coatings, shotcrete and dowels, and sheet metal. This paper will describe the manner and benefits of deploying each of these. Also, the actual and predicted behavior of masonry walls subjected blast are described in an attempt to address a common assessment problem, namely predicting failures when none are likely to occur, which seems to be associated with a misunderstanding of the basic behaviors related to blast for this class of walls.
