Manson—Coffin Relationship for Shear Connectors
Tests to establish a Manson-Coffin relationship for headed studs as shear connectors in composite beams are reported. The joint shear displacement was controlled and the resulting force amplitudes measured. Strain gages monitored each stud and allowed for a separate evaluation of stud failure. Although a considerable variation of stud loading was observed, failure occurred over a rather narrow range of cycles. Like any Manson-Coffin relationship, the one established here for studs covers the full range of fatigue (low cycle and high cycle fatigue). This is a very economical way of determining fatigue resistance. In the future, Manson-Coffin relationships for headed studs should be developed for different amplitude collectives, stud diameters and concretes.
