Coupled Thermo-Poro-Mechanical Finite Element Analysis of an Energy Foundation Centrifuge Experiment in Saturated Silt
Energy foundations are a sustainable and effective technology for heating and cooling buildings. To better understand Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) phenomena in energy foundations, centrifuge experiments involving heating and cooling of reinforced concrete foundations in Bonny silt are being conducted at the University of Colorado Boulder (UCB). This paper reports a finite element analysis (FEA) of the centrifuge experimental setup for saturated conditions, with validation against experimental results to be conducted in the future (e.g., spatial and temporal variation of soil mixture temperature, pore water pressure, and soil skeleton strain distribution). Axisymmetric conditions are assumed for the FEA, although this may not fully capture the threedimensionality of heat exchange in an energy foundation. Future directions for energy foundation FEA are noted.
