Soil Fabric Characterization by Wavelet Transformation of Images
Wavelet transformation has been used to determine particle size distribution of soil prepared by sedimentation through water. In this paper, wavelet transformation was extended to characterize soil fabric. Overlapping 512 × 512 pixel areas of the soil image are analyzed by wavelet transformation. For each analysis area, a soil fabric index (F) is defined through comparison of wavelet decomposition energies in the horizontal and vertical directions. Soil images were obtained in flat surface tests and sedimaging tests, and their F distributions were compared. The F values were equally distributed between values greater than 0 and values smaller than 0 in the flat surface tests, while the soil images from sedimaging tests displayed a strong tendency for F values to be greater than 0. Therefore, F can be an indicator of soil fabric in the laboratory and possibly in situ.
