Analysis and Design of Semi-Rigid Steel Frames
Analysis and design of 3-storey building frame with one, two and three bays, respectively is attempted. Frye and Morris polynomial model is used for semi-rigid connections as suggested in IS 800:2007. Secant stiffness is calculated for connections using Frey and Morris polynomial equation. Values of secant stiffness are incorporated in analysis for all alternatives using STAAD Pro. 2006 in place of assumption of ideal rigid and pinned end conditions. Design process is repeated for member cross-sections to evaluate their optimum weight. Design methodology is presented for selected cases by taking different type of connections to demonstrate efficacy of this approach. Comparison of three alternatives is made for design parameters using semi-rigid connections. Change in stiffness of connections results into balancing span and end moments in beams. Variation in magnitude of sway for frames is also observed. Parameters are indicative of realization of more economical design of frames with semi-rigid connections.
