Impact of Stabilization of Expansive Clay with Corex Slag and Lime
In this work, Corex slag, waste from iron and steel industry mixed with expansive soils and lime. The soil was blended with Corex slag in percentages of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35%, and lime of 2, 4, and 6% by dry weight of soil. Apart from routine laboratory investigation, the cyclic triaxial test was conducted. Analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the breaking the montmorillonite structure of expansive clay when it stabilized and led to the formation of stable calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel. The UCS value of the soil increased from 240 kPa to 989 kPa and the CBR value increased from 1.86% to 98.28% at the maximum. Laboratory resilient modulus (MR) of the stabilized mix after 28 days varied from 195 MPa to 518 MPa.
