Flood frequency estimation using the recommended log-Pearson type III analysis requires an estimate of the skew coefficient. The sample estimate of skewness may be inaccurate when the record length is small. A generalized estimate obtained using regional data provides an alternative estimate, the accuracy of which is difficult to evaluate. An analysis of the standard error of estimate of the skew map recommended in the Water Resources Council in Bulletin 17 is shown to be relatively large and not significantly different from the standard error of estimates obtained from annual flood series. A weighted estimate of the skew coefficient should provide more accuracy providing that the weighting scheme is designed to minimize the error variance.
