The Proposed Lake Erie and Ohio River Ship Canal
The General Assembly of Pennsylvania at its session of 1889 authorized the appointment of a commission to “determine the feasibility of connecting the waters of Lake Erie and the Ohio River by a ship canal;” and, in event of finding such a connection feasible, “to lay out a route for such canal,” and make an estimate of the cost of construction of tho waterway. The commission on this subject, appointed by Governor Beaver in accordance with the terms of the joint resolution above quoted, entered upon the duties with which it was charged in the spring of 1890, and in February, 1891, rendered to the Legislature a report declaring the construction of a proper ship canal, to afford navigation for large vessels between Lake Erie and Pittsburgh Harbor, to be entirely feasible; and estimating the cost of such canal (with locks 300 × 45 feet in the clear, with 15 feet of water on the miter sills), at $27 000 000.
