Tainter Gate Testing and Evaluation
The Tapoco and Yadkin systems, located in Tennessee and North Carolina, owned and operated by Alcoa have a total of 6 hydroelectric dams, built between 1917 and 1957 with a total of 66 tainter gates similar to the gates at Folsom Dam. The six dams are Santeetlah, Cheoah and Chilhowee on the Tapoco system in Tennnessee and North Carolina and Narrows, Tuckertown and Falls on the Yadkin system in North Carolina. In addition to being very old, gate lubrication practices vary both in the type of grease and frequency of greasing used on each of the projects. To prevent a gate failure similar to the one that occurred at the Bureau of Reclamation Folsom Dam on July 17, 1995, Alcoa retained ECI to inspect, analyze and evaluate the condition and structural capacity of the gates at each of these dams.
