Correlation of Observed Damage and FEMA 356 Drift Limits: Results from One-Story Woodframe House Shake Table Tests
This paper presents the results of a series of uni-axial shake table tests performed at Colorado State University on a one-story woodframe house. The objective of these tests was to determine the correlation between the FEMA 356 suggested drift limits and qualitative damage descriptions. Ground motions having varying levels of seismic hazard were used. The house was repaired between each test and a total of six tests were performed. Correlations at each of these seismic hazard/performance levels are discussed for three versions of the one-story house: (1) the exterior wood shearwalls with only oriented strand board (OSB) and no non-structural finishes, (2) the exterior wood shearwalls with OSB and drywall, and (3) the exterior wood shearwalls with OSB and drywall and a non-structural partition wall. Although the drift limits associated with a particular hazard level were not always reached, relatively good agreement between the qualitative descriptions was found.
