Tsunami Modeling for Seaside, Oregon
Potential devastation to the United States coast by tsunamis is exemplified by an analysis of a tsunami event for Seaside, OR. A NOAA flood depth grid for the Seaside coastline representing a tsunami with a 500-year return period was imported into HAZUS-MH for a damage and loss analysis. For comparison damage and loss also were calculated in HAZUS for a 500-year coastal event and a 100-year coastal event derived from the FEMA FIRM map for Seaside. In the absence of a velocity component in the hazard analysis, losses are underestimated for the tsunami. The outcome demonstrates the need to develop a tsunami loss estimation model as a step toward mitigation planning.
