Deflection of Members of Variable Moment of Inertia
A method is herein developed with which the deflections of all points on a curved beam having a variable moment of inertia can be found from the bending-moment curve for the applied loading. The method is analogous to the Williot-Mohr construction method for finding the deflection of trusses. In a truss, the relative joint deflections are found as a result of a change in the length of the truss members. In this paper the relative motions of points along the neutral axis are determined from the bending stress in each segment of the beam.
