Finite Element Analysis of Soil Nailing in Expansive Soils Considering Rainfall Effects
In this paper, a finite element model is developed using ADINA to simulate laboratory model tests of soil nails in expansive soils. In the numerical model, the soil nails are simulated using the rebar model and the effect of rainfall infiltration is described using fluid control equations. The numerical results are in good agreement with the model test results. The results indicate that soils near the top locations present uplift due to infiltration and swelling. The distribution of the horizontal displacements of the facing is like a bell with the largest displacement in the middle location. The axial force of soil nails increases with water infiltration.
